After a few days where the kings agenda prioritized the victims and the influence of DANA that destroyed the southeast of the peninsula and while they were preparing their return together in Valencia, Don Felipe and Dona Letizia went to El. Pardo Palace for an event related to sports. They’ve got Olympic and Paralympic athletes participating in last summer’s Olympic Games in Paris.
Carolina Marin presence
The Kings wanted to personally congratulate them for their titles at the last edition of the Olympic event where Spain won 18 medals (five gold, four silver and nine bronze) and where Paralympic athletes won 40 metals, the best performance since London 2012. They obtained 42 metals. Don Felipe and Dona Letizia received them with great affection in an atmosphere of great friendship and harmony. The Queen greeted some of them with two kisses. Among those present was an elated Carolina Marin, the badminton player we recently saw receiving the Princess of Asturias Sports Award in Oviedo.
Our country had a total of 383 athletes who competed in 31 disciplines. The flag bearers were sailors Tamara Echegoene and canoeist Marcus Walz, while the closing ceremony flag bearers were athletes Maria Perez García and Jordan Diaz, respectively, in the mixed and triple relay walking marathons. Also, Diego Botin, sailing, Alvaro Martin, men’s soccer team and women’s water polo team managed to finish first on the podium.
The Paralympic delegation also had great moments, highlighted by the bronze of Teresa Perales, who achieved her goal of equaling Michael Phelps’ legendary 28 medals, four won by paratriathlon in a single morning, along with gold for Susana Rodriguez and Daniel Molina.
The royal family has gone out of its way this summer to support Spanish athletes. Kings Felipe and Letizia took the delegation to the embassy of our country in the city of light and then participated in the opening ceremony that was flooded. Afterwards, Princess Leonor and Infanta Sofia went to the French capital to support our athletes and handed over to Queen Letizia, who didn’t even miss the Paralympic performance. Don Felipe came to cheer on our athletes and Queen Sofia was in Paris for the last time where she witnessed the women’s water polo team’s spectacular gold and enjoyed the closing ceremony with heads of state from around the world.
