Just one month after tearing his hamstring, Dak Prescott reached a milestone in his recovery.
“It’s actually my first day driving, so I’m living it in the truck right now,” the Dallas Cowboys quarterback told Yahoo Sports on Tuesday. “Having a brace on but being able to drive again after a few weeks is a huge win. Although I still have crutches, I can now walk normally with my crutches [and] Putting more weight on my legs is a big win.”
Prescott partially tore his hamstring tendon in the Cowboys’ Nov. 3 game at the Atlanta Falcons. Prescott missed the remainder of the game, then underwent surgery on Nov. 13 to repair his tendon.
His initial recovery requires allowing the hamstring and bony attachment to heal first. But the Prescott area has begun to rehabilitate.
“I started doing some weight transfers and different core exercises,” Prescott said, speaking on the partnership with Dick’s Sporting Goods. “It’s something I look forward to when I put my crutches down to do a workout.”
The looming offseason gives Prescott the ability to pursue recovery criteria with “no hard timeline.”
According to NFL Next Gen Stats, the Cowboys have five regular-season games remaining and only a 4 percent chance to make the playoffs. The Cowboys went 3-5 with Prescott and have gone 2-2 since.
Prescott expects his recovery window to end before the 2025 offseason begins.
“Not necessarily a rush back,” he said. “However, I see myself entering this offseason [with] No restrictions are even discussed. By the time the time comes, I plan to be fully gone, not even in rehab mode, and working to make myself a better quarterback for this team.”
Prescott watched the Cowboys’ Thanksgiving game from the coach’s booth to avoid the possibility of a collision that he wasn’t mobile enough to avoid, a concern that almost happened when he was on the sideline for Dallas’ Nov. 10 game against the Philadelphia Eagles.
He still has conversations with Cooper Rush and the quarterbacks to help out when they need it, closing meetings to “keep the spirit and vibe as positive as I can.”
Prescott’s review film, pondering when he should let a receiver take another step and when he should buy time in the pocket as routes develop. He wants to prepare mentally for the next season even though he is not ready physically yet.
“Taking a lot of notes,” Prescott said. “Missing the game at the moment. [But] Rehabilitation has begun. Already start getting those small goals and wins, day by day.
“Looks so exciting.”
