Salma Hayek loves food. It’s a fact he makes clear whenever he can. For the past few months, Hayek has been discussing the “Like Water for Chocolate” series.
The Mexican production airing on Max is based on the beloved Laura Esquivel novel of the same name, and has a heavy focus on food, which Hayek revealed was one of the reasons he decided to adapt the story.
In various videos shared on social media, Hayek discussed all sorts of topics, from the title of the series and its meaning to some of her favorite foods.
When asked about his favorite Mexican food, Hayek explained that he couldn’t pick just one. Still, he tried his best.
“For example: there’s nothing like pozole for a hangover,” he said in Spanish. “These pozoles tasted incredible. Some of them were magical. They reminded me of the weddings of my youth that lasted until five or six o’clock in Mexico. They brought out the pozole because we danced the night away.”
“So many memories and emotions,” he said.
The family recipe she now cooks for her daughter
Hayek also shared a family recipe that was passed down from her grandmother and that she now prepares for her daughter Valentina Paloma. “My grandmother made me something no one else did: dobladitas,” he said, referring to tortillas served with sauce and cheese.
“My mouth is watering now. It was a tortilla with beans but they tasted different because she folded them with so much love. No one ever made me dobladitas like my grandmother,” she said.
“I prepared them for my daughter,” she says, referring to Valentina, whom she shares with husband Francois-Henri Pinault. “You can remember your loved ones and your youth through food,” he adds thoughtfully.
