It’s a tradition and unwritten rule that goes back a long way in Great Britain, which clearly dictates that two heirs to the throne cannot fly together on the same plane when traveling outside the country. A rule that, logically, is interpreted for safety reasons in the case of potential and unwanted air tragedies that would mean the presumptive death of both.
Until now, the Princes of Wales have broken this strict rule when traveling abroad during their royal tours, accompanying their older children on their trips to different parts of the planet. This happened during the tour of Australia and New Zealand in 2014, Canada in 2016 and Germany and Poland in 2017.
Apparently, William of England himself sought permission from his grandmother, Elizabeth II, for Princesses George and Charlotte to stay with him and his wife Kate Middleton for several days and many kilometers from their home (Prince Louis was not yet) born, as he was born in April 2018).
However, this temporary subterfuge granted to them by the late king will not be valid from 2025, when number two in the line of succession will be 12 next July. Since that date, he can no longer share seats on flights out of the United Kingdom with his parents or his two younger brothers, aged 9 and 6 respectively.
This is how they traveled when Prince William was a child
Graham Lawrie, a former pilot who worked for Royalty, recalled on a podcast last year Hello! Princess Charles and Diana’s vacation trips with their sons William and Harry: “I basically did the ones when they went to the Mediterranean,” she said. Among these flights, which probably united the Windsors in the same picture with the Spanish royal family in Mallorca at the time.
“The four of them flew together with written permission from Her Majesty until Prince William was twelve years old. After that, he had to have separate planes,” Laurie explained. “Today, for example, the King cannot fly with the Prince of Wales,” he added. Finally, regarding the current situation surrounding this rule, he clarified: “I know that the king is trying to reduce costs in terms of travel, but I believe that safety remains paramount.”
